Despite the fact the film is set in Texas the town scenes and built colonial mansion home are from Beaufort, South Carolina which coincidentally story wise is where the film's main character family descends from in the story. The film despite a few scenes is shot in black and white as Tarantino explains the reason being the family have had their lives torn apart from the death and when the time comes in the end when they have mended the damage and fully gotten over the grief the film reverts to colour. The controversial beginning sequence involving the relative character who is killed (portrayed by Justin Long) is colour apart from the brief crew credits before the actual scene itself which is colour until the truck collides with the relatives' prestigous Red Mustang converting the film's colour to the shades of black and white.
