The Pride festival is held at Sylvester Park in downtown Olympia. Traditionally, The Capital City Pride parade and festival has been on Saturday, but was moved to Sunday in 2007. The 2008 festival and parade occurs June 22. State Sen. Joe McDermott (D) is the 2008 grand marshall. Pride Day is geared to honor civil rights gains in the past year, highlight youth activists and honor long-time activists for their commitments. Entertainment and the Pride Parade are highlights of the day. Approximately 6,000 people attended the 2007 Pride day. The festival is funded through private fundraising and sponsorship, grants and tourism funds. The organization began under the auspices of Rainbow Center Olympia in 1991, and as of 2008 is an independent group with a committee and elected officers. The organization's annual budget is approximately $30,000.
