At the same time, Monroe was approached by Leonard Maloney of the District Attorney's Office to investigate recent drug theft and possible criminal activity at the hospital. Although she was able to trace the suspicious activity to nurse Greg McClintock - who was in regular contact with his girlfriend, Amy Porter, as she served a life sentence for a crime that she had been falsely accused of - Manuel Calderon, having witnessed Monroe's meetings with Maloney, became convinced that she was actually investigating Cesar. Confronting her as she left work one night, Manuel used a needle to deliver an injection of air directly into Monroe's carotid artery, causing her to suffer an aneurysm. Taking her body to a nearby funeral home, Manuel attempted to conceal her in a coffin that was scheduled for burial the following day, but the additional weight of an extra body in the coffin caused the pallbearers to stumble, resulting in Monroe's body falling out of the coffin and her death being subsequently exposed ("Anatomy of a Murder").
