In the real world, the Knightfall Protocol was likely named after the Knightfall Story Arc of the Batman Comics, in which Bane broke Batman's back, which forced him to call upon Jean-Paul Valley (then known as Azrael) to take upon the mantle of the Bat while he healed, only for Valley to go insane, and forced Bruce to reclaim his rightful title.
