On 16 September 2008 Rovers travelled the short distance north to play away to Cheltenham Town. It was the seventh League One game of the season for Rovers, and they had won only one of these. They had also been knocked out of both the Carling Cup and Johnstone's Paints Trophy at the first round stage. In the match Rovers found themselves 2-0 down after half an hour, thanks to a pair of goals by Barry Hayles. Although Rovers pulled a goal back shortly after the break through Rickie Lambert, it wasn't enough for the Pirates to take anything from the game.

| - On 16 September 2008 Rovers travelled the short distance north to play away to Cheltenham Town. It was the seventh League One game of the season for Rovers, and they had won only one of these. They had also been knocked out of both the Carling Cup and Johnstone's Paints Trophy at the first round stage. The Cheltenham side included three ex-Rovers players in the starting 11 and one on the subs bench; Shane Higgs, Barry Hayles, Josh Low and former loanee Craig Armstrong. They also included on loan Bristol City player Scott Murray. The Rovers team had a number of changes from the last match, a 3-1 defeat to Walsall. Danny Coles replaced the suspended Byron Anthony, Craig Disley was dropped to the bench, Chris Lines moved from the right side into the middle to replace him, David Pipe was moved forward from right back to the right side of midfield and Ryan Green replaced him at the back. Jo Kuffour also replaced Darryl Duffy up front. In the match Rovers found themselves 2-0 down after half an hour, thanks to a pair of goals by Barry Hayles. Although Rovers pulled a goal back shortly after the break through Rickie Lambert, it wasn't enough for the Pirates to take anything from the game.
