MacMillan was drafted 15th overall by the New York Rangers in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. However, he started out with the Minnesota Fighting Saints of the World Hockey Association for two seasons. He joined the Rangers in 1974. He reached his peak with the Atlanta Flames in 1978-79 when he scored 108 points and won the Lady Byng Trophy. He retired in 1985, Bob is the father of Logan MacMillan, the first-round pick (19th overall) of the Anaheim Ducks in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
