From the time of the Hegira repeated battles ensued between Mecca and Medina. Sometimes the Medinan forces of Muhammad prevailed, other times it was the Meccans who prevailed. But until 630, the hostilities proved inconclusive. It was in that year that Muhammad finally ended the hostilities by taking over Mecca once and for all. By then, the Islamic faith was almost fully formed, with its precepts defined. When Mecca was taken, it was made over into a strictly Muslim community. All idols were destroyed, and the Kaaba made into a strictly Islamic symbol.
