The 2070 Atlantic hurricane season was an above average season in terms of named storms, but a below average season in terms of hurricanes, major hurricanes and accumulated cyclone energy (ACE). 18 tropical cyclones formed, including 16 named storms, 5 of which reached hurricane strength and only one of which reached major hurricane strength (Oglethorpe). The overall below average activity was attributed to a weak El Nino event, but nonetheless 16 named storms still formed. The overall below average activity was attributed to a weak El Nino event, but nonetheless 16 named storms still formed. The strongest storm of the season, Oglethorpe, struck New Jersey as a major hurricane and was the only hurricane of the season to make landfall in the United States. The first 10 named storms of the season failed to reach hurricane strength, breaking a record from 2011 for the number of storms to open a season that failed to strengthen pass tropical storm strength. However, 5 of the final 6 named storms reached hurricane intensity.
