Red Obsidian is a substance created through purification by Protoss planetary bombardment. Terran researchers theorize that it originated from Vespene geysers being forced under extreme pressure and heat to alter in molecular structure binding to surrounding elements. This combination forced the substance to crystallize and form Red Obsidian.

  • Red Obsidian is a substance created through purification by Protoss planetary bombardment. Terran researchers theorize that it originated from Vespene geysers being forced under extreme pressure and heat to alter in molecular structure binding to surrounding elements. This combination forced the substance to crystallize and form Red Obsidian. Though high in energy, it was found to wreak havoc on any electronic devices within a certain radius (Transformers - G1: Korlonium crystal). Due to this property, researchers had to use basic, low tech equipment to properly determine most of the crystals properties. Some manufacturers tried to develop ammunition based off the substance in order to fight the Plasma shielded Protoss (Mass Effect 2: Disruptor Ammo). Unfortunately, they found it more cost-effective to mass produce EMP Shots due to constant replacement of machines during the process. On the other hand, certain spike throwing strains of Zerg have found a way to integrate Red Obsidian into their bodies. This makes it difficult for automated defenses to function when those strains get too close.
