A serrated or sawback bayonet was a weapon used by armies from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s. Unlike common bayonets, saw teeth were filed into the spine of the blade. The serrated bayonet found use among combat engineers, who might have used the weapon to saw wooden material. It was also provided to German noncommissioned officers. The Hague Conventions forbade weapons that caused grievous injury, such as the serrated bayonet, although some signatories continued to use the weapon through to World War II.
