| - Daniel Okagawa was a human Starfleet officer who served during the 23rd century. He was best known for commanding the Daedalus-class starship, USS Lovell, in the 2260s. Early on in his career, Okagawa served aboard the Drexler-class frigate, USS Helios, under the command of Captain Matuzas. He came to respect Matuzas' lax command style and would one day emulate this himself with his command of the Lovell. (SCE eBook: Distant Early Warning) By the late 2250s, Okagawa had risen to the rank of captain and was assigned command of a science vessel. After commanding the vessel for several years, he was given command of the Lovell. He was at first unsure of the aged Daedalus-class ship and the complement of Starfleet Corps of Engineers personnel assigned to the ship. Originally, he ran the ship like any other in service, but quickly came to realize that the engineers were like no ordinary crew, especially with many of them being civilian specialists. This led him to re-evaluate his command style. (SCE eBook: Foundations, Book One) Okagawa quickly learned to relish his command and be a staunch defender of his team's abilities to get the job done, despite what some senior officers would think of his ship's haphazard appearance. (SCE eBook: Distant Early Warning) In 2268, the Lovell was destroyed in orbit of Vanguard (station) by the Shedai when an attempt to communicate with the entity went wrong. The crew was able to separate the main hull from the drive section and escape. (VAN novel: What Judgments Come) In 2269, after the destruction of the Lovell, Okagawa and his crew were reassigned to Starbase 11, where he was put in charge of the base's starship maintenance and repair depot. According to rumors heard by Commander Mahmud al-Khaled later that year, Okagawa was being considered for command of the entire starbase, along with a promotion to the rank of Commodore.
