Elves unable to come to terms with the new era of peace congregated in Nagarythe, and the subversive Cults of Excess took hold among the population. When Malekith launched his bid for the Phoenix Throne, most of the population of Nagarythe rebelled with him plunging Ulthuan into civil war. The long civil war cumulated in the Sundering, where the dire magical energies unleashed by Malekith and his sorcerers shattered the land. Most of the coastal regions of Nagarythe and Tiranoc plunged into the sea, leaving only thin stretches of land and the Sunken Isles remaining above water. The Dark Elves, as Malekith's rebel Elves were now know, departed Nagarythe upon their Black Arks, eventually settling in the cold lands of Naggaroth. Those Elves of Nagarythe who opposed Malekith's rebellion remained in the shattered remains of their homeland, becoming the Shadow Warriors under the leadership of Alith Anar, the Shadow King.
