Blackwing has the only surviving copy of a treaty made between the British government and the Mississauga Indians in the eighteenth century. He is murdered so that he will be unable to produce it as evidence in a land claim that is about to go to court. When Blackwing's body is discovered in his home, Dr. Lambert realizes that he was stabbed—quite likely with the mate to a knife found in an elaborate case that is designed to display a pair, crossed with one another. However, one of the knives is missing. As she holds up the case, Nick Knight reaches for the remaining knife, intending to put it in an evidence bag. However, he recoils in shock. Only then do they realize that the knife is a religious object. It is Dr. Lambert who has to remove it from the holder and put it in the bag, since Nick cannot touch it. The knife is carved out of obsidian. The hilt of the knife is shaped like the head of a raven.
