  • In the United States presidential election of 1992, there were three major candidates: Incumbent Republican Republican President George H. W. Bush; Democratic Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton, and Independent Texas businessman Ross Perot. Many Conservatives grew angry at Bush when he broke his 1988 campaign pledge against tax raises, and many decided that only independent Perot could solve the nation's problems. Perot himself was considering dropping out of the race in the fall of 1992, but when a large stock market crash occurred in August, he chose to stay in. Bush ran a half-hearted campaign, knowing with the economy so bad he could not win. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton was widely predicted to win the race. However, following the economic recession and Perot's heightened campaign, the campaign began becoming closer and closer. When news broke out of a sex scandal involving Clinton, many voters turned away in disgust as what they viewed as an increasingly corrupt political system, giving Perot enormous amounts of support. Perot won a plurality in the popular vote, and a narrow Electoral College margin.
