Charles Wells was a Victorian-era writer, and the brother of H. G. Wells. Charles is the man commonly thought of as the author "H. G. Wells," although the ideas for the stories published under that name were actually supplied by his sister. As seen in the series, he is a vain and pompous creature, but it may reasonably be presumed that Helena's own, very understandable, resentment of his claiming credit for her concepts might color the portrayal on display.
