A billet is a term for living quarters to which a soldier is assigned to sleep. Historically, it referred to a private dwelling that was required to accept the soldier. Soldiers are generally billeted in barracks or garrisons when not on combat duty, although in some armies soldiers with families are permitted to maintain a home off-post. Used for a building, the term is more commonly used in British English; United States standard terms are quarters, barracks, "Single (Soldier) Housing" or "Family Housing".

The term billet originally referred to the sleeping quarters assigned to members of the military on Earth. When Doctor Julian Bashir resigned from Starfleet to help the Andorians with their reproductive crisis, Doctor Beverly Crusher was temporarily assigned to the open CMO billet on Deep Space 9 as Starfleet intended to hold Bashir accountable for his actions on Andor following the arrest of Baras Rodirya. The DS9 CMO billet was later permanently filled by Pascal Boudreaux. (ST - The Fall novel: Peaceable Kingdoms and DS9 novel: Sacraments of Fire)
