  • Rudy Hires is a former NASCAR driver from Norfolk, VA. He competed in events in his career. Hires debuted in 1951, competing at Darlington. Starting 56th in the field of eighty-two, Hires was able to complete just eighty-two laps of the race before falling out in an accident to a dismal 77th place finish. Hires luckily was able to improve when he returned to Darlington in 1952. Starting 25th in the sixty-six car field, Hires fell many (133) laps down but was running at the end to collect a 39th place finish. Hires held the Mid Atlantic Division Champion status and remained in the circuit for 3 more years racking up a sweeping streak of wins with some of the old greats we now can only read about. Hires also was the track champion in many area tracks at the time that were not sanctioned by NASCAR, although many of the drivers such as Lee Petty, Ralph Earndhart, Tiny Lund and Fireball Roberts were part of the rat pack gang that Hires was a intregal part of the then group. Hires wife Agnes Denson Hires also led the way for women drivers by insisting to drive the cars in races for the Powder Puff class, of which many of the other wives feared the cars built by Hires and driven by his wife. Hires died in 1972 and was survived by his wife, grandson Edward Jennette Jr. and Great Grandson Shane Jennette all of Virginia Beach, Virginia. One story comes to mind as Hires loaned his wrecked car to Joe Weatherly and was driven to the Richmond International Speedway, entered the race and won the feature with Hires wrecked car, there was a 6 lap advantage for Weatherly's victory. Rudy Hires was a great builder, driver and was driven by competition at it's best.
