Dr Marek was a corrupt official at a psychiatric hospital (more accurately an asylum as their methods were extremely cruel, such as lobotomy and shock therapy (practices now considered inhumane - even torture) ) - working with the megalomaniac known as Paul Allen Warner he supplied "Project Threshold" with many test subjects from his own patients.
