- Andy Cartmel had an intense psychosexual fixation on Sophie, which on the one hand lead to her character's improved development over the course of the series, with planned-but-never-executed designs to give her one of the best exits a companion would have ever gotten.
- Sophie attended Blackheath High School and studied drama at the University of Manchester before embarking on a career in children's theatre. In 1987, she was cast as Ace. The Doctor found Ace serving milkshakes on Iceworld in the story Dragonfire, at the end of which she joined the Doctor on his travels. Several stories (Ghost Light, The Curse of Fenric, and Survival) explored her character to an extent that previous companion characters had not seen. | - Andy Cartmel had an intense psychosexual fixation on Sophie, which on the one hand lead to her character's improved development over the course of the series, with planned-but-never-executed designs to give her one of the best exits a companion would have ever gotten. On the other hand, this twisted obsession lead to a desire to either have or destroy her, resulting in numerous "accidents" that nearly killed Sophie on camera over the course of the series production. Fortunately, Sylvester "The Real" McCoy had already been spooning that ass, and was able to rescue her from numerous deathraps arranged by Cartmel.
