  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is allegedly an ultra orthodox, conservative, Hindu fundamentalist political party in India. (According to Wikipedia the Bharatiya Janata Party is Center right rather than ultra orthodox, see Bharatiya Janata Party. The party was formed in 1980. Some of its goal are to ban slaughter of cows (not to be confused with animal rights) and construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. BJP says that Ram Janmabhoomi is the birthplace of Rama. But Rama is a mythological king and never existed on the Earth. It rules the Indian state of Gujarat which witnessed large scale violence against Muslims. The observed effect in BJP ruled states in India is the rise in anti-Christian violence. BJP justifies the destruction of the Babri Mosque, an old mosque in India destroyed by Hindu fundamentalists in 1992. Veneration of the mosque that was destroyed is based on mythology to the same extent that the alleged birthplace of Rama is mythology. A case can be made that the Hindus have a stronger claim to the site. * For Hindus the supposed birth place of Rama is perhaps the equivalent of Bethlehem for Christians. * For Indian Muslims the old mosque was at most the equivalent of Canterbury cathedral for UK Christians. The party was in central power in 1996 and from 1998 to 1999. BJP ruled the country for a long period of time from 1999 to 2004. In the Indian election in 2004, the party was defeated by the opposition coalition and failed to gain power in the center. The party round 2008 rule the states of Himachal Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
