Not knowing that they were villains, the kind old lady was concerned to see that Chaz was bleeding and wanted to offer the thugs some water. Tricked by the lies of Gripper who told her they were messengers from Queen Victoria, the old lady gave them details directions to Chapelvale. In spite of this, Gripper and his gang were still lost after meeting her.
