Upon hearing a commotion outside of his school one day, the wise man ventured outside with his assistants to see that a young peasant boy had knocked out his strong "bouncer". Wanting to know what was going on, the boy explained his situation. Instead of executing the peasant for his insolence, the teacher took on the boy as a student, realising that it was not how you won a battle, only that you won at all.

Musashi's sensei relayed this story to Joe Musashi and four other students on Mount Hotaka, as the young boy in the story was his own sensei. Although little was seen of this wise man (since he only appeared in a flashback in a flashback), it can be assumed that he taught Musashi's sensei's sensei all the techniques required to be a strong warrior, ideas that were passed down two more generations at least. One such survival attack was The Chicken Step.
