It has been a few months since all of the Firestorms have been wiped from existence, and Jason Rusch and Ronnie Raymond have lost their powers. Jason sits in a lab and reflects on how Professor Stein's protocols transformed them into "Nuclear Men". He thinks about how he used to be able to transform one thing into another, when suddenly, there is a flash and the lab is full of balloons. It would seem that maybe his powers are not lost after all. Jason rushes to find Ronnie and informs him that "it" is back. Jason then reflects on how when they first got the power, it was split between them he and Ronnie. Ronnie could throw fire, and Jason could transmute elements. Ronnie, however, is less than happy with this prospect. He values having his normal life back. Later, at the big football game,

Jason then reflects on how when they first got the power, it was split between them he and Ronnie. Ronnie could throw fire, and Jason could transmute elements. Ronnie, however, is less than happy with this prospect. He values having his normal life back. Later, at the big football game, Jason watches as Ronnie tries to save the day as their star Quarterback. Suddenly, Ronnie's train of thought is broken as Helix an early Zither-Tec prototype crashes upon the scene. Jason is shocked at the arrival of Helix since he and Ronnie had watched Helix die when Fury ripped his head off. Helix claims that he can feel the "fire" still within Ronnie, Jason intercedes, and under duress, transforms into Firestorm! However, this time it is different. Like when they transformed into Fury, the two of them are amalgamated into a single Firestorm. The two try to figure out a system of working together in this situation where Ronnie is the body, and Jason acts as the brains. They quickly work in tandem and take out Helix. They then fly into space to release Helix and find themselves causing a huge explosion. Jason realizes that they are now a living bomb, the Nuclear Man. Later, the two consider the consequences of what their situation means.
