  • Clay Sloan is a character portrayed by Peter Jason in the ABC crime series Castle. Sloan was a New York detective who was assigned to investigate the disappearance of Melanie Cavanagh, five years before Castle and Beckett started working together. Given Melanie's past drug habit and her history of running away from her family for prolonged periods, Sloan accepted her husband Samuel's excuses for waiting a day to call in the disappearance relatively easily, and never followed up on reports that he received from Samuel's friend, Charles Wyler, that Melanie was in Philadelphia with an ex-boyfriend. Five years later, he had left New York to become a sheriff in New Jersey, where he was questioned by Castle and Beckett about the shortcomings of his original investigation. After the meeting Beckett noted that Sloan was the type of cop she hated most, as he simply slotted investigations into neat pigeon-holes and ignored or twisted facts to suit those views, rather than find information to fill in the missing pieces of the case.
