Combe was burned down in T.A. 1409 and used as an Orc-hold for two years—rebuilding was complicated by the foul refuse left by Angmarim, but the village was rechartered in T.A. 1420. A single small dirt track passed through Combe and united it with the wider world outside. Unlike Staddle and Archet, Combe did not rely upon Bree for it's finished products, and it was home to a number of independent craftsmen including a blacksmith, a cobbler, a tanner, a carpenter, a stone mason and a weaver. It also boasted a tiny inn, the Blue Trout, for travellers too weary to go on toward Bree. Two private chambers and the taproom— available after hours for thrifty sleepers—were the extent of the Trout's accomodations. The inn was a popular meeting place for the Men of Combe, and the beer was excellent. Combe' contained some fifty homes edged by a few scattered farmhouses. Remote farms lay to the east and south and were also considered part of the communty. The area's soil was fertile, due mainly to a small river, the Rushlight, that meandered through the valley and, indeed, right through Combe itself. * Type: Village * Inhabitants: 60% Bree-man, 40% Hobbit * Population: 200 * Origin: Settled by farmers from Bree in TA 1415 * Purpose: An economic center for those unwilling to trek to Bree; agriculture.
