George County was created in 1862 from half of Traywick County. In 1885, the city of George was chosen as the county seat. The George County Courthouse was renovated about fifteen times from 1867 to 1925, becoming the most renovated county courthouse in Zinrico until 1956, when the Forter County Courthouse surpassed it in number of renovations. In 1979, George County became the first Zinrico county to ban the sale of alcohol.
