She was originally a British Royal Navy warship used by the governor for some minor missions, but took up too much extra space in the harbor. This is why it was given to Jack. It was used once to fight the Black Pearl, which escaped after nearly destroying Jack's vessel. Once he arrived at Tortuga, he either scuttled or sold what was left of the ship and "commandeered" the Jolly Mon. He returned to Port Royal where he found that he was not welcome (he had not been there for several years).
