  • In 1900 PD, Santos held the rank of Lieutenant Commander and served as chief engineer of the light cruiser HMS Fearless. She had served on the ship previously under Captain Rath; she and Alistair McKeon had known each other for some time and considered each other friends. Once the ship was on mission in the Basilisk System, Santos and her engineering team were responsible for reprogramming the Fearless' reconnaissance drones to function as a sensor network around the planet Medusa. During the operation, Santos warmed up to the ship's new captain, Commander Honor Harrington, eventually calling her "skipper", and giving her treecat Nimitz treats of celery. Some time later, Santos discovered that the Havenite freighter Sirius was equipped with military-grade impellers. When the ship broke orbit and tried to flee from the system and summon Havenite "support", the Fearless engaged it and the First Battle of Basilisk began. During the fighting, Santos witnessed one of the younger crewmembers being impaled by a piece of debris, but remained calm enough to stabilize the propulsion systems. When the Number One fusion bottle was hit, Santos went to the power room to jettison it. The containment field collapsed, and the Lieutenant Commander and over forty other crewmembers were killed, but the ship was saved. (HH1)
