Dystopian is an utopic genre, but the world that it depicts is exactly the opposite of a utopia, or a perfect world. That is, the society depicted in dystopian writing is totalitarian and oppressive. The best example of this anti-utopian genre is the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. Brave New World and Animal Farm are good examples too.
