This class of two ships is the second type of dreadnought battleship to enter service in the United States Navy and the first to be constructed after the appearance of HMS Dreadnought. They are not only significantly larger than the ships of the preceding South Carolina class, but were also the first USN capital ship to receive a turbine engine: while USS Delaware sports a conventional triple expansion machine, USS North Dakota was fitted with Curtiss direct drive turbines. As those proved to be insufficient for the desired specifications, they were replaced by more powerful geared turbines in 1915. The ships entered service in 1910.
