The Green-Left Movement was founded as a merger of the Social Democratic Party of Rainier (SDPR) and Rainian Green Alliance (RGA) in 2006. The SDPR had been formed in 1990 as a split from the Labour Party due to the neoliberal policies of the government of Kyle Griffiths as a more left wing, democratic socialist alternative. The RGA was formed in 1985 as the political branch of the ecological movement that formed in Rainier in the late 1970's that focused more on green politics. The SDPR had been formed in 1990 as a split from the Labour Party due to the neoliberal policies of the government of Kyle Griffiths as a more left wing, democratic socialist alternative. The RGA was formed in 1985 as the political branch of the ecological movement that formed in Rainier in the late 1970's that focused more on green politics. The SDPR almost got the same percentage of votes in the 1994 election and during the 1990's looked set to overtake the Labour party as the second largest party in Rainier. The 1999 election saw a small recovery for Labour, resulting in the SDPR and RGA to discuss the possibility of running a joint list for the next elections. In the 2004 elections the parties ran as an electoral alliance, raising their share of the vote to become the third largest party and became the junior coalition partners in the government of Hannah Kwong. In 2006 the parties agreed to merge into one party known as the Green-Left Movement. The Green-Left Movement continued to be a part of the Kwong government after the 2009 election but withdrew from the government after Kwong attempted to push through austerity policies, resulting in the fall of the government and the calling of new elections. The 2012 elections saw the Green-Left Movement fall from the third largest party to the fifth. The Green-Left Movement as a left wing party emphasises democratic socialist, green and feminist politics. Although originally supported by working class voters disillusioned with the neoliberal policies of Labour, its voter base has largely shifted to urban areas amongst young people and ethnic minorities, with its support from working class declining.
