The Right Reverend George Wayne Smith was consecrated tenth bishop of the Anglican diocese of Missouri on March 6, 2002. In the succession of American bishops, he is 975. During his tenure as bishop, he has renewed an emphasis on the vocational deaconate and continued the diocese's commitment to campus ministry. He was born in Abeliene, Texas, on January 29, 1955. He was ordained a priest in 1982. Before he was elected bishop, he was rector of St. Andrew's, Des Moines, Iowa. He did his undergraduate work and first Master's at Baylor University (M.A. 1978), his Master of Divinity at Nashotah House (1981) and his Doctorate of Ministry at The University of the South (1993). He is married to Debra Morris, and they have three children.
