Van Buren was laid down by the Western Pipe and Steel Company at San Pedro, California, on 18 August 1943. She was launched on either 16 January 1944 or 26 March 1944, sponsored by Mrs. J. J. Van Buren, the widow of the ship's namesake, Lieutenant, junior grade, John J. Van Buren. Before John J. Van Buren could be completed, her construction was suspended on 6 June 1944 and cancelled on 1 September 1944. The incomplete ship was scrapped.
