| - Starship articles cover either specific starships (such as Devastator) or starship classes (such as Victory-class Star Destroyer), and are categorized as such. There is also a common desire to categorize these articles by affiliation. This is fairly simple to do for specific starships, where Devastator would be sorted into . It is more complicated when applied to starship classes, as they have a tendency to show up in the hands of various factions. Wikipedia handles this by categorizing naval or fighter classes by the country which produced them. In the more complicated Galaxy Far, Far Away, military contractors often sell their goods to the highest bidder or they arrive in hand by more nefarious means, so this method wouldn't be useful to a reader attempting to find all starfighters ever used by the Rebel Alliance. I think affiliation/faction based categories for starship classes is only practical and manageable for marquee classes that define the organization. The Rebel Alliance stole TIE Fighters and used them to infiltrate Imperial bases, but I would not sort them under . The goal is to provide meaningful but uncluttered categorization. On the other hand, I'm all for avoiding this type of categorization entirely, if that's what the community prefers - I'm just offering this up as a method to handle it. Your thoughts? --SparqMan 19:24, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
* I agree that it'd become to messy and mismanaged. But named starships can of course be placed into specific categories - \\Captain Kwenn// — Ahoy! 20:32, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
* Ditto to above. We could use mitigating words in the categories though, such as "Ships used by the Rebel Alliance" or "Produced by the Empire". But a vague category like "Imperial Starships" I think is definitely inappropriate for startship classes because it is not specific enough. Because for instance, we've got the Nebulon-B that was produced by the Empire but was used more by the Alliance as they stole them and is closely associated with them. Obviously you can tell when you look at the bottom of the page and it has it listed as both "Alliance" and "Imperial" starship categories that hey, they both used them, but if you were going through the category, I think you'd have a lot of stuff you weren't looking for. I have perused these volumes and found them extremely helpful as it lists not only weapons, technology and shipyards, but also the 'COMPANY' and 'HOME SYSTEM' in which the item/vessel/technology was created in the Star Wars Universe. More to follow when I get a copy of this, but I believe it would help considerably in localizing, separating and organizing said starships, weapons, and other technology created for Star Wars as a whole. I encourage anyone who has this or gets these volumes before myself to help out and edit the appropriate links regarding this issue. - Jedi Master Kronus
* Yep, quite a few of us have those books. Unfortunately, they only list a fraction of the actual number of ships and vehicles, so categorization would still be difficult - \\Captain Kwenn// — Ahoy! 22:26, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
* I went ahead and began this large process (with the help of Threepio). Please feel free to jump in and help where possible to allow for a clear delineation between specific vessels and classes. — SparqMan Talk 06:59, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
