Adam finds out that Peggy, unbeknownst to her mother, knows about her father's death; Adam tries to have Laura explain it to Peggy, but Peggy doesn't want to move on. Laura eventually finds a way to help her daughter let go of the loss, and both of them go forward to a new future, which appears to include Adam as well.

During this time, Peggy's mother meets Will Cartwright, who had recently joined the Cartwright household. Laura and Will fall in love, but can't marry because Laura is still engaged to Adam. When Laura and Will go to tell Adam about wanting to get married, Adam has an accident, disabling him in his legs. When he is told about Will and Laura, Adam agrees to their marriage, but they can't get married unless Adam is no longer desabled. Adam's legs recover, and Laura and Will are able to get married.
