The Death Guard of Barbarus was the adolescent Primarch Mortarion's vanguard military force of human settlers, composed of the toughest, most resilient men on the world of Barbarus that the young Primarch could find. They were created in order for the Primarch and the people of Barbarus to take the fight to the monstrous overlords that lorded over the hapless humans of that bleak, inhospitable world. The constant exposure to the higher doses of toxins toughened the troops of the Death Guard. These traits would eventually prove to be transferable to each new iteration of the Death Guard, building up their legendary resilience. This would later become a hallmark of the Death Guard Space Marine Legion which Mortarion would command and rename after his original military force once Barbarus and the Primarch himself were restored to the Imperium of Man by the Emperor during the Great Crusade.
