The 1991 DieHard 500 was a Winston Cup (now Nextel Cup) event held at Talladega Superspeedway on July 28, 1991. Dale Earnhardt led 101 of the 188 laps in route to a dominating victory over Bill Elliott. Earnhardt expanded his points lead with the win, holding off Ricky Rudd (4th) by 160 points. During the race driver Rick Mast had a frightening accident when his car spun in the tri-oval and flipped onto his roof and slid for several hundred feet before coming to a stop, he would walk away without injury.
