Then Mitchell played for the Toledo Mercurys of the International Hockey League until 1959.

- William Richard Mitchell (born February 22, 1930 in Port Dalhousie, Ontario) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey defencemen who played in one National Hockey League game for the Detroit Red Wings during the 1963–64 NHL season and represented Canada at the 1962 World Ice Hockey Championships where he won a silver medal. He played junior hockey for the Stratford Kroehlers and the Toronto Marlboros from 1946 to 1950. From 1950 to 1953 he mostly played with the senior Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen. Then Mitchell played for the Toledo Mercurys of the International Hockey League until 1959. He played for the Galt Terriers when they represented Canada at the 1962 World Championship. In 1962-63 he won the Allan Cup with the Windsor Bulldogs. Mitchell started the 1963-64 season with the Bulldogs and then was called up for one game with the Detroit Red Wings, scoring no points. In 1964-65 he played for the Toledo Blades. In 1966-67 Mitchell was the coach of the University of Toledo. He returned to playing for the Blades in 1967-68 and then took a year off in 1968-69. He coached the Toledo Blades in 1969-70 and the Toledo Hornets in 1970-71. His last games were with the Clinton Comets in 1972-73.
