  • Stegosaurids are thyreophoran dinosaurs that lived from the Late Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous period. Stegosaurs were a unique group of dinosaurs. The family's name means "roof lizards", as it was first thought that Stegosaurus' plates were arranged horizontally like a roof. Stegosaurids only lived in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Each stegosaurid was practically the same, but each of them was a different size and had a slightly different arrangement of plates on their backs. They each had 4 spikes on their tails to defend against predators, and most also had a pair of spikes over their shoulders. The family Stegosauridae includes all but a handful of species in the larger clade of Stegosauria.
