The term "heavy infantry" has no clear use in Modern Warfare. It is understood that the heavy infantry guns have more size and greater destructive power, so use heavy weapons like Mortar, Machine Gun, Rocket Launcher and Bazooka. The mechanized infantry uses the term to refer to infantry also used armored vehicles. • Heavy Infantry units are slow-moving, but very durable soldiers donning heavy armor and having the highest amount of hit points of all infantry. Their role in combat is to fight cavalry, ranging from mounted units in the early ages to armored vehicles and heavy tanks in the late game. They can be somewhat effective against Artillery Weapons and Support Units as well, but are very weak when having to fight Foot Archers, Gunpowder Infantry, Modern Infantry, and late game Machine Guns. In the earlier ages, they are also effective against buildings such as Cities, though Artillery Weapons rapidly become superior with each successive age, diminishing their role as besiegers.
  • During the middle ages, at least in Europe, there was a marked evolution away from the regular heavy infantry - infantry became irregular peasant levies, while the heavy infantry's battlefield role was taken by heavy cavalry (Knights), which were now formed by the numerically small wealthy elite, as the heavy infantry had been before by the more numerous urban wealthy of the ancient era.

In the earlier ages, they are also effective against buildings such as Cities, though Artillery Weapons rapidly become superior with each successive age, diminishing their role as besiegers. Starting out as close-range fighters, mostly with spear and shield, and later pikes, they retain their melee role until the Gunpowder Age, protecting the powerful but vulnerable Gunpowder Infantry from the onslaught of cavalry. In the Enlightenment Age the Heavy Infantry retains this very role, but now replacing the pike with the flintlock, increasing the unsafe distance for cavalry to approach. In the Industrial Age onwards they become the answer to cavalry's transition from animal to engine, and adopt anti-tank weaponry.

In Random Kingdom, some factions still employ 'conventional' heavy infantry even in the gunpowder age - for example, the Red Guards of the Soviets (and Leninist Dynasty) are armed with assault rifles and armored extensively with steel helmets, breastplates and the ability to deploy into personal sandbag kits. Historically, such armor was indeed used by soviet infantry during World War II and was mainly equipped on infantry that rode tanks (wikipedia:Tank desant), ironically making this heavy infantry not only more heavily armored but also more mobile than the lighter 'foot' infantry in battle (although it is expected that the regular infantry units were at least motorized as well, simply fighting on foot, but transporting in motorized vehicles). The most closest modern equivalent would be mechanized infantry and amored infantry (whereas generally their predecessor, motorized infantry, can be light or medium or 'old' heavy, as the motorization is not given a role in direct combat to protect the soldiers or grant additional firepower). This increased armor and mobility makes it hard to distinguish the development to modern heavy infantry from wether it is not rather modern armored cavalry, although the main dividing line seems to be that armored cavalry is rather actually tank units and armored cars, supported by a few motorized, mechanized, or armored infantry units - it is not supposed to carry infantry or deploy infantry that fights dismounted as a substantial part of these unit's combat strength. As you go further up the Tech levels, heavy infantry becomes quite fashionable again, as Powered armor and Mechas become available. Powered armor qualifies as heavy infantry, while mechas, depending on their size, may qualify (at the low end), but are propably more accurately classed in a tank role, but a class of themselves, not as tank class. The Asian Alliance in Red Alert 2: New World Order uses such powered armor infantry, capable to move under its own power at an appreciable pace.
