Boone is a city in and the county seat of Boone County, Iowa, United States. It is the principal city of the 'Boone, Iowa Micropolitan Statistical Area' which encompasses all of Boone County, Iowa. This micropolitan statistical area, along with the 'Ames, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area' comprise the larger 'Ames-Boone, Iowa Combined Statistical Area'. The population of the city was 12,803 at the 2000 census.

This micropolitan statistical area, along with the 'Ames, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area' comprise the larger 'Ames-Boone, Iowa Combined Statistical Area'. The population of the city was 12,803 at the 2000 census. Boone is located on the historic Lincoln Highway and was the birthplace of First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. The city has a long railroad history and is home of the tourist Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad. Boone is also the headquarters of the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Fareway chain of grocery stores. It is also home to a campus of the Des Moines Area Community College. Boone is the home of Kate Shelley, a railroad heroine of the late 19th Century.
