That all changed in 2266, when the Fesarius discovered the Federation starship USS Enterprise entering First Federation territory. Unsure of how to react to the strange vessel, Balok sent out a warning buoy to scare the Enterprise away. However, when the Enterprise destroyed the buoy, Balok took the Fesarius to intercept them. Wanting to appear more threatening, he communicated with Captain James T. Kirk using a fearsome-looking dummy. He wanted to know if the human crew were hostile, so he tested them, first by threatening to destroy them, and then testing their compassion. (TOS episode: "The Corbomite Maneuver")

Kapitán Balok vyhrožoval, že Enterprise zničí, ale kapitán Kirk mu namluvil, že Enterprise veze náklad korbomitu, mimořádně silné látky, jejíž exploze by zničila i Fesarius. Balok potom pozval posádku k sobě. Výsadek tvořil kapitán Kirk, doktor McCoy a Bailey. Ukáže se, že Balok je spíše přítel než hrozba (TOS: The Corbomite Maneuver). Tato loď byla velmi vyspělá. Plavidlo Fesarius bylo schopné vléci Enterprise pomocí vlečného paprsku ve vysoké warpové rychlosti po delším dobu, aniž by došlo k napínání trupu vlečené lodi.

Kurz darauf wird die Enterprise von der Fesarius abgefangen. Mit seiner überlegenden Technik überwacht Balok, von der Fesarius aus, alle Vorgänge an Bord der Enterprise. Als Captain James T. Kirk eine Warnung an die Vereinigte Föderation der Planeten schickt, überprüft Balok die Daten und vernichtet diese. Um die Gefahr der Enterprise zu bannen, beschließt Balok die Enterprise zu vernichten. Balok übernimmt endgültig die Kontrolle die Enterprise und gibt der Besatzung 10 Minuten Zeit mit ihrem Leben abzuschließen, bevor er das Schiff vernichtet. Jeder Versuch von Kirk mit der Enterprise zu fliehen scheitert. Mit einem Trick versucht Kirk Balok, in dem er behauptet, dass sich Corbomit an Bord befindet, zu überlisten. Diese Substanz soll laut Kirk die Wirkung haben, dass sobald ein Schiff der Sternenflotte zerstört wird, ausnahmslos alles in einem bestimmten Umkreis unweigerlich mit zerstört wird. Balok fällt auf diesen Trick herein. Mit einem kleinen Schleppschiff will Balok die Enterprise zu einem Planeten der Klasse M bringen und die Besatzung dort aussetzen. Später stellt sich heraus, dass Balok die Fesarius von diesem Schleppschiff steuert. (TOS: )

Balok was most impressed with the human crew, and gave them a tour of a First Federation base. As part of a cultural exchange, Lieutenant David Bailey was to remain aboard the Fesarius. (TOS novel: Dark Victory) After spending twenty years exploring the Alpha Quadrant, Balok and Bailey took the Fesarius into the Delta Quadrant. Their next contact with anyone from the Federation came in 2373, when Captain Kathryn Janeway and the crew of the USS Voyager rescued Bailey from the Mondasians.
