For a short period of time he was the Vice Captain, succeeding Hiyori Sarugaki due to her exile; but due to a sickness caused by an accidental hollowfication fiasco he was forced to resign being succeeded by Nemu Kurotsuchi. After Yue went rogue he ran away to the world of the living and while he was there he managed to obtain his bankai as well as mastery of his hollow powers. It was here that he witnessed the White Invasion of Sousuke Aizen and his Espada and how they were stopped by the Gotei 13 and the Vizards.
