Originally, the squadron was 1265 DF, a detached flight of 1265 (Horncastle) Squadron. The detached flight was formed in January 2010, with 17 Squadron being officially stood up in June 2011. The Squadron's number, 17, was selected due to the presence of 17 (R) Squadron (RAF) being based at RAF Coningsby for testing and evaluation of the eurofighter typhoon. 17 (R) Squadron (RAF) have since transferred to Edwards AFB, USA to perform testing and evaluation of the F-35 Lightning II.
