The 2009 Atlantic hurricane season was an unusually active season, featuring 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes. Much like the previous season, there was an unprecedented number of hurricane landfalls, with Mexico and the United States, especially Florida and the Carolinas, being the hardest-hit. The season also featured the first major hurricane landfall in the United States in four years, with two storms making landfall in the United States at major hurricane intensity (Ida and Kate). Cumulatively, the season's activity and landfalls made it the fourth-costliest Atlantic hurricane season on record.

  • The 2009 Atlantic hurricane season was an unusually active season, featuring 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes. Initial pre-season forecasts did not accommodate above-average activity due to the likelihood of an El Niño developing this year, however, conditions favored a La Niña weather pattern that had persisted through 2007 and 2008. Due to the La Niña, coupled with a warm AMO, activity was well above-average. Even as mid-season outlooks were issued, favoring an active season due to increased activity, forecasts still fell short of the actual activity. Impact during the season was widespread and significant, with several storms becoming notable. The strongest storm of the season was Hurricane Fred, a powerful Category 4 hurricane that struck Bermuda at Category 2 (nearly Category 3) intensity, becoming the strongest hurricane to hit the island since Fabian in 2003. Like Fabian, Fred's eye did not pass over the island, thus, the storm did not make landfall. Hurricane Ida was the most devastating, making landfall in Florida as a 120 MPH Category 3 hurricane, becoming the first major hurricane landfall in the United States in the four years since Hurricane Wilma. Ida caused massive devastation as it tracked through the Yucatan and Florida panhandle as a Category 3 hurricane, causing massive flooding and extreme wind damage. Hurricane Bill, a strong Category 4 hurricane, produced rough surf and large waves in and around the Greater Antilles while it passed to the north of the island chain at peak intensity. Bill would later make landfall in North Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane. Many other tropical cyclones impacted land during this season. Tropical Storm Ana made landfall in Veracruz, bringing heavy rain and causing severe flooding. Hurricane Danny made landfall in New York as a tropical storm, causing minimal damage. The remnants of Hurricane Erika caused heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in southeastern Florida. Tropical Storm Grace brought gusty winds and heavy rain to the Azores, while the remnants of the storm caused wind damage in Spain. Tropical Storm Joaquin was responsible for fatal flooding across the Leeward Islands and triggered mudslides in Haiti. Hurricane Kate struck the Yucatán as a strong tropical storm that brought flooding rains to the country, before later going on to make landfall in Florida as a major hurricane. Hurricane Odette also struck eastern Mexico on the same day Tropical Storm Jimena in the East Pacific made landfall on Jalisco. The combination of the two storms caused record-breaking rainfall and flooding across much of the country. Tropical Storm Rose, the final storm of the season, later struck New Orleans, Louisiana as a tropical depression, with energy from the remnants of the system contributing to the formation of a nor'easter over the mid-Atlantic states.
