Syd N'aanzi was an outlaw mechanic from the Sluis Van system. Like most members of his species, Syd was cool and methodical, and his skills as a mechanic and engineer were beyond reproach. He first met Jacen Wayland when the Corellian contracted him to assist him with making some modifications to his ship, the MidKnight Son. Wayland was incredibly pleased with the work, and began coming to N'aanzi with any and all work he needed done on his growing fleet of ships. During Grand Admiral Thrawn's attack on the Sluis Van shipyards in 9 ABY, N'aanzi's workshop was heavily damaged, and rather than replace his lost equipment, he accepted a permanent assignment with Wayland's privateer/smuggling group, Wayland's Wilders. N'aanzi captained his own ship, a modified YT-2000 named Sidewinder. One of N'aanzi's most important assets is his cousin, Raan, who owns a starship repair business among the Hapes Consortium. Syd has been able to trade goods seized by the Wilders to his cousin in exchange for miniaturized Hapan starship components, which (after further modification) find their way into the group's starfighters, pushing their capabilities far beyond the original designers' specifications. He made a number of modifications standard on Wilder vehicles, including HoloComm transceivers on all space and ground vehicles, replacing laser cannons with pulse lasers to increase their rate of fire, quick-computing NavComps on all hyperdrive-equipped starships (that didn't use astromechs to store coordinates), the inclusion of networks of short-range, rapid-fire blaster cannons on capital ships as an additional defense against missile/torpedo attacks, and altering the shield generators of all spacecraft, so that their shields would automatically engage when the ship exited hyperspace. The shield systems would also automatically redistribute auxiliary power to wherever the shields were coming under attack. Syd was knowledgeable about blaster weaponry as well, boosting the power of his personal weapon, a KYD-21 blaster pistol.
