In 2366, the USS Monitor was on patrol on the Federation side of the Romulan Neutral Zone to counter a possible cloaked Romulan base in the Neutral Zone. In early 2367, the USS Monitor patrolled the Neutral along with the USS Berlin. In 2374, the Monitor was one of sixteen Federation ships assigned to defend the Setlik system against Cardassian forces during the Dominion War.

- The USS Monitor was the first ironclad warship commissioned by the United States Navy. The ship played a central role in the Battle of Hampton Roads on 9 March 1862, where she fought the casemate ironclad CSS Virginia (the former steam frigate USS Merrimack) to a standoff. The unique design of the ship, distinguished by its revolving turret, was quickly duplicated and established the Monitor type of warship.
