Las Meninas (The Maids of Hounour) is a painting by the Spanish Baroque artist Diego Veláquez, painted in 1656 with oil on canvas. It shows a large room during King Philip IV's reign, in which the young Infanta Margaret Theresa of Spain is in the centre surrounded by maids, chaperones, a dog and dwarfs. Just behind, Veláquez is shown painting a large portrait of Philip IV and his wife Mariana. While this is commonly believed, it is still debated. Las Meninas is one of the most widely analysed paintings in the world, with discussions as to whether it hints at the line between illusion and reality and the question of imagination. It resides in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain.
