Officer Cadets are officers-in-training of the Colonial Marine Corps who are still attending Officer candidate school, learning what it takes to be an officer. They may during their time at the Academy serve temporarily on a ship in the form of field training. It is rare - but not unheard of - for a cadet at the Academy to be granted a temporary commission as an ensign. This, however, is only done in instances of truly outstanding grades.
