The Peace Bowl was a football game held in Alabama in 1945, after the Second Great War. The U.S. Army brass had hoped to create some good will between the occupiers and Confederate civilians, with a team of each playing in a high school stadium. Instead, the players became increasingly rough with each other. In the last four minutes of the game, with the U.S. down 28-24, Confederate guerrillas began launching mortars into the stadium. In the long run, more Confederate civilians were killed than U.S. soldiers. Armstrong Grimes was one of the US Army players.
